With mixed emotions, we announce the closure of our premises at Park Hill, which has served as our home for the past eight years. This difficult decision was driven by ongoing challenges with the building’s infrastructure, which was impacting our ability to provide safe working conditions for our staff and studio holders, and further hindering our efforts to present a public programme. In addition, the increasingly challenging financial climate has made our continued operation and future plans at Park Hill sadly untenable.
We understand this news may be disappointing, and we want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported us at Park Hill over the past eight years, and in particular, all the artists who have been based with and shown at S1, your dedication and passion have been invaluable. From many memorable and impactful exhibitions, events, and artist residencies, we’ve made many lasting memories in this iconic space.
However, this closure marks just another chapter in our ongoing story. Following several years of planning and development to establish a permanent home for S1, we are working closely with Sheffield City Council to relocate our plans to the city centre as part of our joint Gateway to Sheffield Levelling Up Fund project. This regeneration project will transform the Castlegate area through several interventions including, the development of new cultural venues, a new public green and event space, the deculverting of the river sheaf, and opportunities to explore the area’s rich heritage.
While we are sad to say goodbye to Park Hill and the plans we all worked hard to realise, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. We remain committed to our mission of supporting artists and introducing new work to audiences and look forward to sharing updates on our progress and plans as they unfold.
