Based in the heart of the city, S1 has for over 10 years fore-fronted contemporary art production within Sheffield. S1 accommodates twenty artists working in the city who are at different stages in their career development and work in a diverse range of media and approaches. The open plan studios encourage a dialogue about contemporary art practice and an exchange of ideas between the S1 studio artists. The annual members’ show is an opportunity to see new work produced by S1 artists over the past year and includes painting, photography, video, print works, sculpture and installation.
Matthew Harrison will present a digital print/poster that continues his body of work referencing the career, life and output of Marcel Duchamp, the one-man art movement credited with shaping the contemporary art of today. Kate Allen continues her tale of a small, imaginary community struggling to overcome their problems in a new series of pencil drawings Breaking the Sea Cucumbers. Jane Walker’s drawing and embroidery works investigate and compare the deeply contrasting and rapid urban development of two very different cities, Sheffield and Luxembourg. The S1 Members’ Show will also feature new sculptural works by Chris Henry Clarke and new paintings by Warren Hayes and John Burke.
S1 Artspace provides studio space for over twenty artists and hosts a programme of commission based exhibitions and contemporary art events. S1 was founded in 1995 by a group of Sheffield-based artists seeking to create and sustain quality studio space at an affordable cost. S1 created a different kind of studio environment for artists in the city with open-plan workspace managed by a committee of artists who mobilised a dialogue around contemporary art practice by opening up one of the studio bays as a temporary project space. In 2003 S1 appointed a curator to develop a programme of exhibitions and off-site commissions and S1 / projects was launched. S1 / projects works with artists practising in a broad range of media from across the UK and overseas to support the development of new work at a key stage in artists’ careers. |
